Orchid Extravaganza 2016

This year we have celebrated Singapore’s National day with a breathtaking display of orchids at the Garden by the Bay! If you have not yet visited Garden by the Bay, you can still catch the Orchid Extravaganza 2016′ which runs from 22 July to 28 August in the Flower Dome at Gardens by the Bay.Gardenbythebay19

Designed by Singaporean garden landscape designer Alan Tan, “Orchid Extravaganza” will feature over 200 orchid species and hybrids. Alan Tan discovered his love for plants 25 years ago when he started work at the Singapore Botanic Gardens. A total stranger to the Plant Kingdom and horticulture prior to this, he learned about the industry on the job with the support of his co-workers and supervisors.

Set amidst an enchanted forest where the mythical Orchidians call home, a stunning display of some 12,000 orchid plants. We were amazed to see the different variety of orchid plants and many of them I have not even heard or seen before.Gardenbythebay27a

Did you know there are more species of orchids in the world than the number of bird species or even mammal species?

Be it the myriad of colours of the well-loved Phalaenopsis, the intriguing kite-like flowers of the Masdevallia, or the bright, flamboyant blooms of the Cattleya, there is an orchid for every taste.

Phal is named after the Phalaenopsis genus, one of the most popular orchids among enthusiasts because of the multitude of hybrids in almost every imaginable colour. You will find these little cottages are almost similar to a movie set.   Gardenbythebay32a

‘La Famille de voyageurs’ (A travelling family) depicts a family visiting Gardens by the Bay before heading home. As they depart Singapore, they take with them beautiful memories and leave a part of themselves behind. Inspired by the universal theme of travel, French sculptor Bruno Catalano’s eye-catching works, with their dashed bodies and the deliberate lack of volume, invite the viewer to mentally reconstruct the possibility of the human potential.

  1. I remember my mom with these flowers. She used to be a fond of orchids and different flowers way back when we were still young. We have this wide garden in front of our house. How I wish I could as well see these flowers when I visit Singapore.

  2. When I read posts like this, I always remember my childhood and Mom. I grew up with a Mom who so love flowers and yeah! ORCHIDS! And I was the one who assisted her arranging the pots, the plants around the Orchids! Ah! I miss doing those stuff! Missing mom too!
