Switzerland was our next destination after Paris and we loved the time we spent exploring the beautiful architecture in Paris. We felt every street, every building has so much history and architecture.
Ask any Bollywood fan and Switzerland will top the chart, I grew up watching YashRaj movies so a visit to Switzerland was a must. I asked my kids what comes to their minds when they think about Switzerland and they said, ” Nature, Greenery, Chocolate, Toblerone, Trains, Snow, Glacier water, skiing…..” Aayan and Kaira were as excited as us to visit Switzerland.
We took Eurorail from Paris to Zurich and from Zurich, we took a train to Interlaken and the overall journey took around 7 hours but as it was pretty comfortable and it was warm inside.
All the trains are well equipped with Toilets, charging points, USB ports and even a restaurant kitchen serving Tea, Coffee and food. You can also bring along your food to eat.
Switzerland
The very important thing, I would recommend is buying a Global Swiss Travel Pass for your Switzerland travel as it is not only convenient but you save a lot of money as well and if you have kids under 16, they have free rides in Switzerland.
Always check for the advance discount when booking your trip as you can get the travel pass for a 30% discount as well.
Day 1- Interlaken
We reached our Airbnb around 2 pm around and had a quick lunch we really wanted to explore the nearby areas before it gets dark. We went around the last week of November and it was pretty cold and usually, it gets dark by 5.30 pm.
Usually, we travel without any planned itinerary so it comes with the flexibility to change or spend more time wherever we felt like exploring. Basically, this family trip was to take it slowly and enjoy it with kids.
Remember that you just can’t soak yourself enough in nature when in Switzerland.
Every corner is so breathtaking whether you visit in summer or winter. For the places nearby Interlaken we have covered them up walking and make sure to wear comfortable shoes as you will be walking a lot unless you are driving.
We explored Spielmatte, Unterseen and Aare. If you have more time you can explore Unterseen Old Town, it has impressive row of houses built directly along the Aare and the mountain panorama right behind it.
Interlaken has quite good supermarkets around like Coop, Migros and Denner so if you wish to stock up on fruits, snacks, and bakery. You might like to consider as eating out in Switzerland is pretty expensive and most of the time spending the entire day out we just want to head back and relax.
We love to carry tidbits with us for kids and most of the places we have planned to explore in Switzerland are usually like for the entire day so it was best to carry food along like sandwiches, nuts etc.
Check out where we headed for Day 2 in Switzerland….
