Swift Explorers Singapore
The Swift Explorers Singapore celebration at Apple Marina Bay Sands this morning saw 16 schools presenting their winning app ideas to Guest-of-Honour, Mr Tan Kiat How, Senior Minister of State, Ministry of Communications and Information (MCI). I had an opportunity to attend this wonderful event where every school represented their apps, benefits and how useful they are in our everyday lives. Swift Explorers Singapore

Some of the student apps

East Spring Secondary School – Screen Master

Screen Master is an app which allows students to monitor how much time they are spending on their phones. Students can also set a limit to their screen time and to specify downtimes during which gaming and social media apps cannot be used.

Naval Base Secondary School- Study Cheese

Study Cheese is an app that allows students to set targets, create notes and keep track of the dates of their exams all in one place. the app also allows students to keep track of the amount of time they have spent studying. By having all these features in one app, students no longer need to switch between multiple ones which affects the flow of their studying.

Woodlands Ring Secondary School- Focus

Focus is a social productive application that rewards users to stay off their phones. Created as a social application, Focus is a competitive environment which encourages our users to keep one another in check.

  • Phase 1: Inclusive App Design Activity
Great apps start with great ideas. Across 2 months, teachers conduct an Inclusive App Design activity within 2.5 hours each month with students as a way to introduce them to the world of coding and app development. Students will come up with an app idea connected to a topic they care about, then discover how to design with inclusion and accessibility as a centrepiece of their app design.
  • Phase 2: Everyone Can Code Bootcamp
During the June holidays, students will spend 4 hours learning basic coding skills with fun activities using Swift Playgrounds on iPad. Primary school students will learn how to create their own virtual world, while secondary schools and junior college students will learn about basic app building.
  • Phase 3: Build Apps with Swift
In this face-to-face boot camp, students will learn how to turn their app designs into fully built simple utility apps within 2.5 months.
