Lessons of worth

Why do we define our success or worth based on the criteria set by society? L’Oréal’s Lessons of Worth campaign aims to inspire more women to start conversations about uplifting and empowering other women.

Lessons of worth

We constantly compare ourselves with others and lose confidence by just looking and thinking that others are doing better than us, be it about the job level, lifestyle, looks, raising our kids and so on.

We can’t help but think they have it all!! Somewhere within ourselves, we define our success or our worth based on the criteria set by our society. Have you ever felt this way before? Or ever thought to yourself, ‘Why can’t I be like her?’

When I went back to work after focusing on my health and well-being, I felt nervous thinking about how everyone would perceive me. I was insecure that my peers had gone up the career ladder when I returned, I felt the stress of being left behind.

It hit me again after my daughter Kaira was born. I loved being a full-time mother, but I felt restless and unproductive not being able to work, it was like a piece of me was missing.  My self-esteem was so low as I kept comparing my situation with others, doubting myself and feeling less worthy every single day.

Lessons of Worth

I have always loved writing, but I was afraid of what people might say about my career choice. But when moms who followed my blog came up to me and shared that they felt so connected with every story I wrote, I started to believe that writing was the right path for me. I should not let any situation or other people’s judgement cloud my worth. That’s when I decided to kickstart my writing career.

It has been the best decision thus far! Writing allowed me to talk about things I am passionate about. I found the confidence to stand out. Today, I share everything online about raising kids in a foreign land, my life’s journey, travels and my positive outlook even after undergoing the toughest phase of my life.

This International Women’s Day, I would like to help empower women to take charge of their success, so I’m honoured to work with L’Oréal on their #lessonsofworth campaign, which aims to inspire more women to start conversations about self-worth.

L’Oréal is also working with Dress for Success Singapore, to help low-income and marginalised groups of women through a personal development workshop and their Your Hour, Her Power donation campaign. L’Oréal and Dress For Success Singapore both believe that women should lift themselves up based on their own standards and define their own worth.

Celebrate every milestone and success, small or big set by women of all walks of life.

Let’s not wait for others to define success for us — let’s define it on our own terms. Because we’re worth it!
