5 tips to manage without a helper

Manage without helper

Managing your home with or without a helper is a choice. Nowadays, with working parents, kids classes and activities, we do feel that we need another helping hand and we can’t survive without a helper but is that really impossible or are we too much dependent on a helper. Singapore is a wonderful place where you can easily get a live-in helper, nanny or a part-time help but it is not so affordable everywhere.

How are parents there managing everything on their own? Does that mean they have got ample of time on their hands or kids don’t have studies? I was a full time working mom with my elder one in a full day child care and I used to fetch him and cook dinner for all of us. It was a couple of years back when I choose to be a stay at home mum taking care of my two kids.

Do you think we can manage our home and family without a help?

Managing home without a helper

I come across this million dollar question many a time!

“How do you manage without a helper?!”

Some time back I wrote a post about ” A week in the life of a blogging mom” where I have shared my routine. I am living without a helper neither a full-time nor a part time from last 2 years. Trust me I too have bad days with loads of work, cleaning, cooking, blogging and still manage to spend time with kids taking them to the playground, swimming etc.

5 tips to manage without a helper

Thanks to a very supportive husband who do understand that it is our home.

1. Put  everything back before sleep
I have been following this simple routine from years now to clean and put back everything at their place before heading to bed. You will find a positive vibe every morning to see the clean rooms and kitchen. Trust me it will be much  easier to find everything.

2. Assign days for work
You can assign your household work like cleaning bathroom, windows, mopping and not tiring yourself with everything in a day.

At least for me not possible with pick and drop for my kids from school, cooking and studies.

Make use of gadgets if you can as it helps to save time and efforts- washing machine, dryer, dishwasher.

3. Grocery shopping
Always make a grocery list and stick it to your refrigerator so that you know what need to be replenished or you will require for the entire week. Keeping your kid’s school snack, fruits, veggies etc in mind. It actually helps you to avoid the unnecessary trips to the supermarket. If you can manage to do an online grocery shopping it is quite helpful on the days when you don’t feel like stepping out.

4. Plan your meals
Since we cook all 3 meals at home so I try to plan ahead for the day what to cook. It saves time and hassle of what to eat or cook and kids will let you know their favourite food to be cooked.

I always cook at home and know that my family is getting the right nutrients and fresh food at the table. Check some quick recipes or snack here.

5. Involve your kids

You might think it is messy and will take time but it is going to help kids in the long run in learning and taking responsibility at home. You can assign them small and simple task –

  • Ask them to separate their clothes from the washed laundry and help in folding
  • Keeping their toys back in the boxes
  • Setting up the dining table
  • Well, they love and hate it at the same time.
  • They can help you in some baking or cooking as well as you never know you might have a Chef at your home.

  1. I have manged to survive without a helper around and it’s quite easy once you organize everything and fit them into a schedule. The kids are required to help out as well, basically, everyone in the family have chores assigned to them! These are very helpful tips, tried and tested!

  2. This is very timely because we do not have household help at home. But the different thing is that we are three adults and my mom doesn’t have to attend to certain needs that we used to have when we were kids. We assign tasks so that we won’t get too tired at the end of the day.

  3. Great tips! I do believe that we can manage home and family without a helper. However, we probably won’t have too much time left to pursue our own interest and indulge in self-care. I have a helper, and it allows me to start a business from home and the income I get more than cover the cost of hiring her.

  4. Our family is also maidless. Another tip is to have a ‘it’s ok’ mindset. It is fine if the laundry piles up, or when there’s no time to cook on some days. getting kids to be involved in also a great tip!

  5. When my maid went back for good I felt tt I can’t cope with chores and my younger one was just barely 3 years old. With planning and good time management is possible!
