February 21 is observed as International Mother Language Day! Mother Tongue or Mother language is the first language we all have learnt in our life. It is something that represents us and makes us stand out on the world map 🌎
In this global world, we somewhere dwarf our own mother language because we feel the commonly spoken language will give us an edge and we somewhere feel proud of it. Intentionally or unintentionally that is drilled to our kids as well because that is what they see.
It is always good to learn a new language/s but not at the cost of your mother language because when a language dies, a way of feeling that culture, traditions die with it.
International Mother Language Day
In 1999, UNESCO officially made the announcement to observe Feb 21 as International Mother Language Day or Matribhasha Diwas(in Hindi) to promote the preservation and protection of all languages used by peoples of the world”.
40% of the world’s population do not have access to education in the language they speak or understand best, it hinders their learning, as well as their access to heritage and cultural expressions
Have you ever felt everything you feel and enjoy more when it is spoken in your mother tongue be it some food, jokes, old stories.
