Primary 6 is an important year for kids here in Singapore which means a proper study routine and more focus on every subject. Aayan is sitting for his PSLE (Primary school-leaving examination) this year too.
We are just a month away from PSLE Prelims and only have time to quickly revise our concepts. The last few months due to Covid 19 pandemic happening things absolutely went in a different direction with school closure, everything shifted to Home Based learning, tuition centre closed leaving everything to self-study.
Science is Aayan’s favourite subject and I know he can spend his entire day doing it but somewhere it was a bit difficult for us as a parent to help him out with everything that is taught in the school and I started searching more website or study material which can help him out.
I came across a website which has got flashcards for PSLE Science concepts and was quite surprised because I always thought that flashcards are for toddlers. Are you surprised like me??
Learnintt ( Learning in Transit) was set up in 2015 by Mandy Zhang with an aim to bring “Learn through Play” concept and to promote a positive learning attitude, she has 10 years of teaching experience in Primary English, Science, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Memory skills Trainer and Motivational Skills trainer.
These cards are made for Primary 3 to 6 students- Lower Primary Science Flashcards and Upper Primary Science flashcards based on the latest MOE syllabus and it consist of all Science chapters. You can be assured as these are edited by ex-MOE Teachers to adhere to PSLE Marking System to enhance the Quality of all Flashcards!
I have incorporated these cards for Aayan last month and he has been not only learning but enjoying these cards in a fun way.
5 ways why PSLE Science Flashcards are fun!
1. Kids Friendly Reference coding
Every Flashcard set has 140+ pages with a colour coding for every chapter and page numbering which makes sorting easier for kids and they can easily refer to any chapter and page without mixing them. Just refer to the table content on the first page and assigned colour code. It is inspired by Rainbow cake to make it so colourful and sorted.
2. Mnemonic way
Mnemonic device or memory device is a learning technique that aids information retention in human memory using the elaborative encoding. I clearly remember the things I have learnt using Mnemonic way are still there in memory like remembering the rainbow colour using VIBGYOR (Violet, Indigo, Blue, Green, Yellow, Orange, Red) and Knuckle Mnemonic – to remember the days in each month or the planet one.
These flashcards use famous celebrities name, using everyday familiar thing like Kiasu or places like Universal studio makes it easier for content retention because our brain remembers the fun and interesting stuff for longer.
3. Essential Keywords
Kids can’t remember everything they have read but if certain keywords or you can say Golden words are there, they can remember it is easier for them to score especially in Booklet B of the exam paper.
Look at this question and if you can remember the important keywords and the tips given on the flashcard like “We know that water boils at 100 degree Celsius.”
4. Breakdown of Complex Concepts
Looking at this question it might look simple but then it is a tricky question and during an examination, everyone has a limited time to spend on each question. If you can breakdown the complex concepts into simple explanation it will make learning more enjoyable for young minds.
Classifying them this way makes it much easier to reply.
5. Flashcard games
This is one of the best ways to learn and enjoy at the same time when you are playing along with learning. Aayan and Kaira do it together sometime since she has not yet started with Science but Aayan keep throwing some science questions at her to make her understand.
Aayan asked her, “What are the conditions for bread mould to form?” He keeps giving her a clue like- W.O.W. which stands for Water, Oxygen, Warmth.
6. Point form
Every flashcard has a point on the top right side so whenever your kid answers correctly they can give them that score. You can also track their performance chapter wise and then at the end of every week can see the improvement areas.
Overall these PSLE science flashcards help kids to do self-study and understanding the concept which in turn build up their self-confidence and develop the independent studying skills.
