Singapore Cancer Society: Celebrate, Remember and Fight Back!
An inaugural event that aims to rally communities to come together to battle cancer.
Relay for Life (RFL) 2017, a 17-hour event, brings the community together to Celebrate the lives of cancer survivors, Remember those lost to the disease and Fight Back against a disease that has taken so much. Organised by the Singapore Cancer Society (SCS), this inaugural event will take place on 18 and 19 February 2017 at Bukit Gombak Stadium.
The opening ceremony will be graced by Guest-of-honour, Minister of Health, Gan Kim Yong.
Relay For Life is a global movement founded in May 1985 by America Cancer Society in Tacoma, Washington. It has since grown into a worldwide event with 24 other countries taking part. Close to 4 million participants took part in RFL across the globe annually, making it one of the world’s largest fundraiser. Participants taking part in the Luminaria Ceremony, remembering those who have lost to cancer.
To Celebrate, Remember and Fight Back, RFL has three key moments during the event:
Survivors Lap – All cancer survivors at the event take the first lap around the track, celebrating their victory over cancer while cheered on by the other participants who line the track. There are also the caregiver lap where we recognise and celebrate caregivers, who takes care of their family and friends during the cancer journey, and the community lap where we thank them for giving love and support to cancer patients around them.
Luminaria Ceremony – This takes place after dark where the stadium will be illuminated with LED balloons to remember people who have fought and lost the cancer journey and also to support those whose fight continues. The balloons are placed around the relay track as glowing tributes to those who have been affected by cancer.
Fight Back Ceremony – The emotionally powerful ceremony inspires relay participants to take action. It symbolises the emotional commitment each of us can make in the fight against cancer – how we can take action and spread awareness of cancer research, treatment and prevention.
With the goal of uniting people who have experienced cancer – be it as a patient, survivor, caregiver, family or friend, this first RFL aims to raise $800,000 to fund the various SCS programmes and services. The event targets a crowd of 9,000 participants over three time slots. There will also be other family activities and performances throughout the overnight event.
